ACCOUNTING GUIDE

How much does an accountant cost?

Learn what affects accountant fees for UK businesses and how to compare accountancy packages beyond the headline monthly price.

There is no single standard fee for business accountancy. Prices depend on the work required, the complexity and quality of your records, and the level of advice and contact included. Comparing the scope of service is usually more useful than comparing one headline number.

What affects the price?

Business structure, turnover, transaction volume, VAT registration, employee numbers, bookkeeping quality and the number of services required can all affect fees. A business needing regular bookkeeping, payroll and management accounts will usually require more work than one seeking only year-end support.

Monthly packages versus one-off fees

Some accountants offer a monthly package covering an agreed range of services, while others price annual accounts, tax returns, payroll or advisory work separately. Neither approach is automatically better. Ask for a written scope showing exactly what the quoted price includes.

Watch for additional work

A low monthly fee may not include bookkeeping clean-up, tax enquiries, company secretarial work, extra payroll runs or detailed advisory work. Ask what is treated as additional work, how it is authorised and how you will be told about extra charges before they arise.

Software may be included

Some packages include access to bookkeeping or receipt-capture software, while others expect the business to pay for its own subscription. Check whether software is included and whether you retain access to your records if you later change accountant.

Compare service as well as price

Consider response times, who your day-to-day contact will be, sector experience, how often your figures are reviewed and whether proactive advice is included. The cheapest quote can be poor value if the service does not match what the business actually needs.
